Could Reno Have its Own De Trashers?
There’s a growing movement of Litter Legion and Pick Up Pigeons in New York City, calling themselves de trashers, who are organizing fun, regular, lively community events for cleaning up their city and specific neighborhoods.
The pigeons even have their own communal YouTube channel, tee shirts they sell for fundraising, and a detrashed subreddit.
While there are extremely laudable occasional efforts here, wouldn't a collective, grassroots, well advertised and attended, regular, consistent, weekly gathering at different spots also be nice?
It would certainly be a much better outcome than having mobile surveillance cameras storing our every movement in the supposed name of keeping the Truckee River clean (aka gentrified, and only for the affluent to benefit from).
“The Litter Legion was founded in June 2020 by Catie Savage aka the Trash Queen of Hell’s Kitchen. After a brief respite from NYC in May 2020, Catie returned to find her neighborhood littered with to-go food & drink containers, bottles, cans and other trash," the website for that organization indicates.
"At the same time, the Department of Sanitation’s basket truck services were reduced by 67% due to budget cuts. Rather than ignore the litter, Catie rallied community members to help clean up our streets. Together we pick up litter and empty overflowing corner baskets. We also sort out recyclables that would otherwise end up in the landfill."
