Is it time for more pinpoint data center moratoriums or should we have one across the country as well as a Sovereign Wealth Fund for existing ones?
A local sent us this USA Parkway area photo today asking for Sparks to follow suit with Reno and get its own moratorium on new data centers within the Rail City.
This begs the bigger question of whether the moratorium should simply be country wide which would then encompass Storey County.
Earlier this year, Senator Bernie Sanders and Congressional representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez announced the Artificial Intelligence Data Center Moratorium Act.
“AI and robotics are creating the most sweeping technological revolution in the history of humanity. The scale, scope and speed of that change is unprecedented. Congress is way behind where it should be in understanding the nature of this revolution and its impacts,” Sanders said. “Bottom line: We cannot sit back and allow a handful of billionaire Big Tech oligarchs to make decisions that will reshape our economy, our democracy and the future of humanity. We need serious public debate and democratic oversight over this enormously consequential issue. The time for action is now. We need a federal moratorium on AI data centers.”
“We have seen ICE partner with AI companies to surveil Americans, social media users employ AI bots to create sexually explicit deepfakes of women and children, and data center construction inflate electric bills in communities across the country. And all of this harm has occurred because of the absence of federal legislation to regulate AI,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “Congress has a moral obligation to stand with the American people and stop the expansion of these data centers until we have a framework to adequately address the existential harm AI poses to our society. We must choose humanity over profit.”
Last month, Sanders even went further on these issues, introducing the American AI Sovereign Wealth Fund Act with the idea to give the public a 50% ownership in the largest artificial intelligence (AI) companies in our country.
“Left unchecked, Artificial Intelligence and robotics threatens the jobs, privacy rights and mental health of every man, woman and child in America,” Sanders said. “As a society, we can no longer sit back and allow a handful of Big Tech oligarchs to determine the future of this revolutionary technology with no democratic input. AI was not created out of thin air. It was not a brilliant idea that just popped into Mark Zuckerberg’s head or Elon Musk’s imagination. The foundation of AI is based on the collective knowledge of humanity and the creative work of tens of millions of people. The American people must have the ability to slow it down and make sure that AI benefits humanity, not just the richest people on the planet. That’s precisely what this legislation does.”
