Good Neighbors Warming Center Initiative Doubles Nights at Local Churches in its Second Year
The Good Neighbors Warming Center initiative has lined up its second year of no-barrier, welcoming warming center locations starting tonight until March 31st 2026, doubling the nights it is offering for women and families in need, with food and case management also offered.
The first night will be hosted at the Reno First United Methodist church tonight.
This website https://spotlightaction.org/hampton-house has an email mailing list for required training for volunteers and a sign up for shifts.
The initiative is coordinated by Hampton House Garden, the Reno Initiative for Shelter and Equality (R.I.S.E.), Laundry to the People, Family Soup Mutual Aid, Reno Hearts You and “wonderful community members.”
The other three churches hosting will be the same as last year, St Thomas Aquinas, the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd and Trinity Episcopal Church, each one on a one week rotation for 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. overnight assistance.
Over 100 people attended an orientation meeting in late October to prepare for this new edition of nighttime cold weather compassion.
According to organizers about a third of those who used the services last winter had never previously accessed government services, including the Cares Campus, which many people we interview still view as prison like and intimidating with all the people staying there.
