Multiple flights have been cancelled in and out of Reno Tahoe International Airport today after the FAA ordered airlines too begin cutting flights due to the federal shutdown amid concerns about airport staffing shortages.
“This isn’t about politics — it’s about assessing the data and alleviating building risk in the system as controllers continue to work without pay,” Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy said in a statement Thursday. “It’s safe to fly today, and it will continue to be safe to fly next week because of the proactive actions we are taking.”
The administration is directing U.S. carriers to trim their schedules by up to 10 percent at 40 US airports including major hubs.
The move comes just weeks before the busy Thanksgiving travel season as the shutdown shows no signs of ending amid diverging political priorities in Congress.
