UNR Students Hold Counter Borgs to Break Oppression, Raise Ground
Following a photo which circulated on local social media of two UNR students holding borgs spelling out the n word, other students held borgs that together spelled out "Breaking Oppression. Raising Ground."
A "borg" (an acronymym for "blackout rage gallon") is typically a DIY alcoholic cocktail popular among college students, made in a half-gallon water jug with a mix of vodka, water, electrolyte powder, and flavor enhancer.
UNR officials said an investigation had been initiated, with many students calling for the two students to be expelled.
"In response to recent events and images that have caused much harm around campus, we chose to reclaim the idea of “borgs” and redefine what they stand for. At the University of Nevada, Reno, every student deserves to feel safe, respected, and valued regardless of their race, ethnicity, background, or identity," the group who asked us to share this photo indicated.
"Let this remind us that tailgate season is a time for connection and community, and that it is up to us to uphold such values while also ensuring it remains a space that unites EVERY student.
On that note, racism is NEVER a joke. It isolates, dehumanizes, and damages the sense of belonging that every person deserves. This image represents our commitment to breaking cycles of hate and raising ground—creating space for awareness, unity, and respect. Change begins when we choose unity over silence and accountability over indifference.
Let us continue to stand up for what is right."
