Questions Surround Recent Arrest, Director's Departure Ahead of Long Delayed County Homelessness Meeting

A screenshot was sent to us of a Mathew Grimsley booked on November 22nd on a third offense of a battery domestic violence charge with a $50,000 bond amount.

A Mat Grimsley is listed on the Karma Box Project team’s website as the safe camp supervisor, while his full name is used on social media pages related to that position. The Karma Box founder and executive director Grant Denton who receives a salary of $106,900 as director of the non profit according to the last available tax returns, was investigated and then cleared by the county in 2024 after accusations of improper conduct made by several women.

“He is not a county employee, so you’d have to confirm employment with the contractor,” Bethany Drysdale from the county’s communications team wrote back to Our Town Reno today after we asked about the recent Grimsley arrest.

Messages to the Karma Box and to County Commission Chair Alexis Hill went unanswered.

This comes as the Community Homelessness Advisory Board has scheduled a meeting on December 2nd, after not meeting since May 2024, despite repeated requests from advocates for people without stable housing.

Our latest reporting indicated the Karma Box Project received a total from the county not to exceed $1.8 million to run the safe camp at the Cares Campus in the July 2024 to 2025 period.

In mid September, Dana Searcy, previously the division director for Housing and Homeless Services, left her position abruptly without any details provided by Drysdale for that. Her LinkedIn has not been updated with a new position.
