Kristopher Gari’s aunt reached out to Our Town Reno today still looking for answers, she wrote us, after her nephew was shot and killed by police in west Reno in November 2024.
She also shared these tribute photos of his life.
Gari had multiple interactions with police leading up to the deadly shooting, with one reported on November 16th in the area of Sutro and Castle Way near the Reno Livestock Events Center.
Released body cam footage showed him driving away in an SUV despite being tased by officers, during the first incident, in which police say he was driving an unlicensed car with a revoked driver’s license.
On the morning of November 17th 2024, after being located in the area of the 700 block of Twin Lakes Drive on private property, police said their body cam footage showed Gari driving away in the same vehicle from a group of officers surrounding him, striking several police cars while fleeing.
Then just before 1:40 a.m. on November 18th 2024, in the area of W 4th and Keystone Ave, after locating him again, an officer got into his car to try to detain him, followed by a fight over the officer's gun, with Gari erratically driving away with the officer inside the car. At that point, after a crash and the car starting up again and driving on the wrong side of the road, the body cam footage shows the officer shooting and killing the 25-year-old.
The Washoe County medical examiners office said Gari died from multiple gunshot wounds.
“I’m reaching out in hopes of finding any witnesses who may have seen or have information about the fatal shooting of Kristopher Anthony Gari, or the days leading up to the shooting, which occurred in the early morning hours of November 18, 2024, near 4th Street and Keystone Avenue,” Britt Tjeltveit wrote us.
“If you were in the area that night, saw or heard anything, or have photos, videos, or other details, please reach out,” before adding her phone number (541) 513-1327, and saying she’s available on messenger at Britt Tjeltveit.
“Any information, no matter how small it may seem, could be important. Thank you for your time and help.”
