Hate Filled NIMBYism in Old Southwest Reno

Item D1 Wednesday at the returned City Council meeting will be a Reno Housing Authority Alley Abandonment request, between Reno Avenue and West Taylor Street, east of Arlington and west of Lander street, as part of plans to build a 40 to 45 unit affordable housing project with one and two bedroom units in the old Southwest neighborhood, where there used to be a busy Catholic Charities run pre school.

RHA bought five parcels in all on both sides of the alley for the new project, including several fenced off playgrounds.

Residents in that area reached out to Our Town Reno saying there had been an extremely contentious meeting in late July including expressions of hate-filled NIMBYism for a plan which if approved could see scheduled construction begin in 2027.

There have been concerns of reduced parking and declining property values, while at the meeting the words “ghetto” and “drug abusers” were mentioned, and many said they wanted more information about the details of the RHA plan, which will probably come more to light on Wednesday.
