UNR Responds to Yik Yak Photo of Two Students with Words on Jugs Forming N Word

UNR has responded to our query about the two UNR students who held BORG jugs side to side spelling out the N word in a photo previously circulated on the Nevada Yik Yak, saying the matter is currently under review.

A video we've posted shows the two students with the two jugs doing a video skit in what appears to be a UNR fraternity house.

One has been identified as a pre-nursing student and the other on the Dean's List in psychology.

"The derogatory racial term depicted in the video and photo is reprehensible," the University of Nevada wrote back to Our Town Reno this evening.

"Any form of racist speech or hateful conduct stands in direct opposition to the University’s mission and values. Acts or language intended to demean, intimidate, or marginalize have no place at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Regarding the specific incident you referenced, the matter is currently under review by the appropriate University authorities.

The University is committed to fostering a campus community grounded in respect, inclusion, and support for one another. Incidents such as this are wholly unacceptable and cause harm not only to those targeted, but to the entire institution. It remains our highest priority to ensure that students, faculty, and staff learn and work in an environment where every individual feels valued, safe, and supported.

A range of support services is available to students, faculty, and staff. University Counseling Services, the Downing Counseling Clinic, and the Student Health Center are available to help students. Faculty and staff can find assistance through the Employee Assistance Program. The University’s LiveWell Program is also available to help prioritize your well-being and navigate campus resources."

A borg (Blackout Rage Gallon) is typically a homemade alcoholic drink in a gallon jug, made with vodka, water, flavor enhancers and electrolytes.

Yik Yak is a location-based, anonymous social media app, often described as a local bulletin board for people within a 5-mile radius, which is popular on college campuses.
