Disturbing Bodycam Footage Shows and Then Has Audio of Young Black Man in Altercation with RTC Guards

Disturbing bodycam footage shared with Our Town Reno shows a young Black man in an altercation with security guards at the RTC 4th street bus station very early on the morning of June 17th, after he says he was trying to retrieve a phone he had forgotten on the bus, and was told by a driver it was with security available for pickup.

A bodycam video he shared with us timestamped from 1:14 a.m. shows him up close to an officer yelling at him to “Leave the property.”

The young man repeatedly asks a second security guard in a pleading voice to turn his own body cam at which point there’s a tussle and the bodycam footage shared with Our Town Reno then points upward, with the sound of clanking and what appears to be handcuffs being applied but no people visible in the video.

“Let go,” the young man can be heard saying in a muffled voice, “you’re choking me,” “I’m complain’”, “let go,” before saying it several times louder, and then “you just choked me out,” before the three reappear in the video.  At that point at 1:16 a.m. the young man is seen being forcibly walked away.

Another grainy overhead video shared with Our Town Reno shows an altercation between the three with the young man between the two guards.

More bodycam video shared with Our Town Reno then shows police arriving at the bus station at 2:15 a.m. with the guards saying the chain of events started with the young man kicking at a door.  One of them explains that when they attempted to put handcuffs on him the young man allegedly fought back.

“Yeah he hasn’t given shit,” the officer says before going to talk to the young man saying he doesn’t have his name, before chuckling, and one of the guards saying “you guys are lucky the one before this got naked,” before they all chuckle.

At 2:16 a.m. on the bodycam footage the officer opens another room’s door inside the RTC station finding the young man handcuffed with his hands in his back.  The young man admits to kicking the door, and says he got “choked out,” and that he has head pains and wants an ambulance.

A fourth video with police at the bus station at 2:31 a.m. has an officer asking one of the guards “at any point were you actually choking him or anything like that,” to which the guard replies no.  “I was just trying to hold him still,” he says.  “Did one of your arms go around his neck or anything,” the officer asks, to which he nods no and mumbles something hard to understand.

A police incident information report was also filed on December 24th, requesting a formal criminal investigation against the Allied Universal guards.

We contacted Allied Universal Security Services but got no response from them.  Josh MacEachern the Public Information Officer for RTC Washoe wrote back saying our query into this was forwarded to its Safety & Security Officer for review, but we have not heard back since.
