Reno PD Says It's Having Meetings Related to the Wyatt North Killing, Amid Brother's Frustrations with the DA's Office

Dalton, the older brother of Wyatt North, has made a new poster called “Justice for Wyatt North,” calling locals to “Make a Difference Today,” and turning it into a campaign issue supporting Wes Duncan in the Republican primary for the Washoe County District Attorney position against incumbent Chris Hicks.

North died at 21 from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso and extremities October 1st, following an early evening shooting at the Highlands apartment complex near UNR, according to the Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

“I have some meetings this week in reference to this case. I will give you an update when I can,” Reno PD Public Information Officer Hunter Mercurio wrote to Our Town Reno today.

In an interview last week with Our Town Reno, Dalton said he previously met with local law enforcement. According to his account, he says he received indications there was a fight between his brother, who was reported unarmed, and another man in the Highlands parking lot area, with the man who was driving a young woman visiting a friend who lived there, where Wyatt was also living and just returning home, driving in as well.

According to Dalton, 32, the altercation happened in an area without any surveillance camera coverage with police still seeking to find witnesses willing to detail what they saw.

He says he was told the man’s face was beat up, and that the man in the altercation then shot his younger brother in the back, fearing for his life and claiming self-defense, before leaving the scene. Dalton says he was told there was no “stippling” on Wyatt and no burn marks on his clothes, leading him to think of a further away shooting than in the process of the fight itself.

“He was working two jobs. He was kind of getting his feet on the ground,” Dalton says of his younger brother who he says had just moved into that apartment complex with roommates several months prior. He says at the time of his killing he was employed at a UPS while also doing deliveries.

“He had a positive impact on really everyone in his life,” he said.

Wyatt had gone to Damonte Ranch, worked straight out of high school, before going to live with his dad in Arizona for a few months as Dalton said he “was going through a rough patch. Being from a divorced home, things like that, this was also right after COVID, things like that played into … where he was at, so I think he needed to get away from who he was hanging out with, [as he] got into a bad crowd there for a little bit.”

Dalton, who works in the security and fire alarms industry, says Wyatt then came back to northern Nevada and lived for a while with their mom, “ready to start figuring things out. He started getting jobs. He worked at CVS for a little bit. Then went to UPS. He was a typical 20, 21-year-old kid trying to figure it out. I basically told him find something you like to do. He had a pretty serious girlfriend in Idaho that he would go up and visit.”

Dalton remained silent for a while, tearing up, before concluding “I want answers,” as to what happened exactly around 7:30 p.m. October 1st outside the Highlands which tragically resulted in his younger brother being killed.
