Tesla refuses to comment on federal lawsuit on alleged abject racism at Gigafactory

In a story first reported by the Independent out of Britain last week, a lawsuit by a Black employee at the Tesla gigafactory outside Reno, Kamern Cowan, alleges there has been “ongoing severe, pervasive, race-based discrimination and harassment,” regular use of the n word by others on site, “welcome to the slave house” being said by coworkers, a supervisor equating Black and Indigenous workers to livestock, and staffers who made gorilla noises when seeing Black colleagues, while he says HR there quickly closed a case of his complaints without explanation.

Cowan says he started working at the gigafactory in late 2023 in a section called Cooling Tubes Production when the racism against him allegedly immediately started.

After being moved to a different work area, he says the alleged racism persisted. He says that due to the abuse he changed his route to get to work within the gigafactory, often making him late and even getting punished for his tardiness.

Cowan is asking for monetary damages as no measures were taken to correct the situation.

Tesla has not been responding to repeated requests for comment we made since seeing the report last week about the complaint filed in Nevada federal court.
