Could Local Musicians do a Free Palestine Benefit Local Concert?

Such a great initiative by the rapper Macklemore to announce a “Free Palestine” tour after being dismissed from Ed Sheeran concerts, with dates already booked in Dublin, Paris and London.

He probably won’t be having a stop in Reno but it made us think how about local musicians doing their own Free Palestine benefits show? Which musicians would like to take part and which venue would be willing to organize?

“I’ve spent the last week reaching out to artists who have shown up and used their stages to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people, regardless of the consequences,” Macklemore wrote on his social media. He was dropped by the Ed Sheeran tour after making pro-Palestinian commentary during an opening set.

“Artists who understand that our platforms mean very little if we’re only willing to use them when it’s safe.”

The proceeds of his new tour without Ed Sheeran are to benefit groups including Gaza Soup Kitchen, Middle East Children’s Alliance, Jewish Voice for Peace, Medical Aid for Palestinians, Palestine Children’s Relief Fund and UNRWA USA, which could be the same for our local version.

“People are asking artists to show up, educate themselves and be in community. To use the stage for more than entertainment. To push back when the call for a Free Palestine is met with attempts to silence it,” Macklemore wrote in his statement which has gotten 1.5 million likes.

“What happened to me is bigger than one artist or one stage. When the billionaire class can decide which voices are allowed on stage and which ones are too dangerous to hear, everyone should be paying attention.”
