Public Documents Point to Student with Sword at Spanish Springs High School on February 5th

While the Washoe County school district wrote back to us saying there had been no arrest at Spanish Springs High School on February 5th, and media reported “a lockdown alarm was mistakenly activated due to a technical error,” on that day, we received photos taken from inside the school showing a detained individual outside on school grounds.

This led us to file a public information request for which we received a response today, with a Washoe County School District Police document indicating there was "a reported person with weapon solved at the scene" listed as 1065 Eagle Canyon Drive, Sparks; SSHS.

The document mentions a student with a sword.

The timing of that event though is from early afternoon, according to the event record document, while the lockdown had been reported in the morning.

"This inaccurate information was broadcast to our students and activated a brief lockdown," Principal Sean Hall said in a statement sent to school families that day. "There was no emergency at our school today."

"Please see the attached record in response to your recent public records request," Breanne Read wrote to us today with documents indicating there had been a student with a weapon.

"There are no other public records responsive to this request. Personally identifiable student information, including information that may reasonably lead to either the identification of a student or to the identification of personally identifiable student information, is protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), is not provided under Nevada’s Public Records Act, and has been redacted from the report."
