Another Karma Box Employee is Arrested, Turning Up Pressure for Safe Camp Operator Ahead of Next County Meeting

Grant Denton, the executive director of the Karma Box, told Our Town Reno the Jessica Hillman currently in custody is an employee of Karma Box listed on its website as a supervisor.

He said he was looking into the situation, when asked what Karma Box was doing about this. Her charges include allegedly exploiting an old vulnerable person. She joins two other former Karma Box employees currently in county custody, Mat Grimsley on a third offense domestic battery and another Eddie Luna following a pistol whipping incident.

Luna was dismissed by Karma Box after being charged in late February and now faces a $200,000 bond. Grimsley, a former Safe Camp supervisor, has a $50,000 bond. Karma Box has been getting county money for years to run the Safe Camp at the Cares Campus, even as Denton has faced his own allegations of misconduct he denies.

A planned community talk at Black Rabbit Thursday with Denton called Good Talk, Man was reported postponed to a later date after community uproar about it on social media but still appears on the bar's website calendar.

We contacted the county and Karma Box Chief Operating Officer Ian Anderson about this latest development but have not heard back. The DA's Office indicated to Our Town Reno another current employee recently pled guilty to owning or possessing a firearm by a prohibited person. Community advocates have called for the county's Karma Box contract to be canceled, which figures to be a point of intense discussion at the upcoming Community Homelessness Advisory Board meeting on March 16th.
