Why is a local pastor boycotting a popular farmer-owned dairy cooperative?

Craig Dyson, the lead pastor of Convo Church in Reno, has a post on his public Facebook holding up Tillamook cheese with a red circle ban around it and the words “Adios Tillamook” as well as a Halal graphic.

Tillamook cheese has been facing pushback from extreme conservative types on social media in recent days for having a certified Halal guarantee on its packaging.

“It’s food dedicated to idol worship,” Dyson writes. “Halal certification helps to fund efforts of Islam both locally and globally. It’s NOT simply a dietary issue. No Christian should be purchasing or supporting Halal products," a publicly available Facebook post proclaims.

“Founded in 2018 by our Lead Pastors, Craig & Cara Dyson, CONVO Church is a dynamic charismatic Christian church that exists to lead all people in becoming passionate biblical disciples of Jesus Christ filled with the Holy Spirit,” the Convo Church website indicates.

Certified halal food means that an independent organization, in this case the Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America, has inspected and verified a food product, its ingredients, and its manufacturing process to ensure it complies with Islamic dietary laws, including not involving pork, blood, alcohol or certain animal-derived additives.

Tillamook is a farmer-owned dairy cooperative based in Tillamook, Oregon, well known for its award-winning cheese, ice cream, and other dairy products.
