Eight Dead, One Missing in Avalanche in Guided Excursion near Truckee Turned Tragedy
Eight skiers have been found dead and one remains missing after being caught in an avalanche yesterday in the Castle Peak area while on a guided mission with the Blackbird Mountain Guides company, which had posted an online video warning of the big storm just several days ago.
Six other skiers, reported as one Blackbird guide and five clients, survived the planned excursion to the Frog Lake Huts which went tragically wrong, according to a press conference with the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office which can be viewed on their Facebook page.
Survivors themselves located three of the dead while waiting for rescuers. There were nine women and six men in the group. Those who survived were reported as one man and five women, listed as between 30 to 55. Two of them were injured, and one remains hospitalized but is expected to survive.
