Saint Mary's Nurses Strike Underway in Reno
A nurses strike at Saint Mary's is underway despite the harsh cold and winter conditions in Reno right now.
"Pickets will be from 6:30am-5pm with a rally at 2pm. We appreciate support from the community and our allies," Renee Ruiz, a community organizer, wrote in an email.
Nurses at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nev.,previously gave notice to their employer, Prime Healthcare, that they would hold a strike for one day, with other similar protest actions in California this week.
"Nurses at Saint Mary’s are represented by National Nurses Organizing Committee/National Nurses United (NNOC/NNU), the country’s largest nurses union," a press release indicates.
"Nurses have been in negotiations since last summer for a new contract with little to no movement on key issues. The RNs urge management to invest in nursing staff and agree to a contract that provides safe staffing and a commitment to practices that recruit and retain nurses amid high nurse turnover."
"We respect our employees’ rights and value the essential role nurses and all caregivers play in caring for our patients and community," the conclusion of a statement by Mark Reece, the Corporate Regional Director of Business Development, Marketing, and Communications - for Prime Healthcare indicated.
"Our focus remains on supporting our teams and ensuring quality care to our community.”
