Nevada Greek Life Leadership and Students Respond to Two Students Holding Borg Jugs Spelling Out N-Word

"The racial slur depicted in the video and photo is reprehensible. Any form of racist speech or hateful conduct stands in direct opposition to the University’s mission and values. Acts or language intended to demean, intimidate, or marginalize have no place at the University of Nevada, Reno," Eloy Barriga, President of the Interfraternity Council at the University of Nevada, Reno, wrote to Our Town Reno today after a photo of two students holding borg jugs spelling out the n-word on Reno’s frat row recently recirculated on local social media.

There was also a video circulated of the two students holding the jugs inside a fraternity house.

"Regarding the specific incident you referenced, the matter is currently under review by the appropriate University authorities," Barriga wrote.

"The University is committed to fostering a campus community grounded in respect, inclusion, and support for one another. Incidents such as this are wholly unacceptable and cause harm not only to those targeted, but to the entire institution. It remains our highest priority to ensure that students, faculty, and staff learn and work in an environment where every individual feels valued, safe, and supported."

"Why are you entering a field taking care of people and like being with people in a vulnerable state, when you're being so ignorant with your decisions and the things that you say and believe in just by doing that,” Shiloh, a 19-year-old pre-nursing major says of a fellow student in the same track shown in a photo recently recirculated on local social media with two borg jugs spelling out the n-word.

Marcos, an 18-year-old freshman who likes to play guitar on campus, called the photo offensive and insensitive.

“It's just something that people shouldn't be doing, and they should know already, like we're mature, we're old enough to know that it's not something that we should be doing," he said.

Roger Miller, 19, an undeclared major, studying psychology like the other student in the photo, was stunned.

“Going here, knowing people are going to see it, knowing people are going to react the way they're going to react, it just doesn't make sense to me," he said.

UNR President Brian Sandoval previously released a statement saying the matter is under investigation, with many other students calling for the two to be expelled as soon as possible.
